Alternate Great War by GTD-Orion Alternate Great War by GTD-Orion
This map shows an alternate history World War I ( Great War ) scenario.

In this scenario, Russia does not participate in the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the end of the 18th century. Because of that, the various historical events occur slightly differently, with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth taking the place of Russia in many events. It eventually becomes a Republic of Three Nations ( the three nations being Poland, Lithuania and Ruthenia, with all three of them having a truly equal say in governing matters ).

As a result, during the Great War, it is the Republic of Three Nations that's a part of the Triple Entente, and not Russia ( Russia itself becomes a relatively peaceful republic shortly before the Great War ).

This map shows exactly those alliances: the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance, as they were shortly before World War 1.

Download for full view.

The flags and the filter that I used for the Republic of Three Nations flag are made by Minefield, who made an awesome filtered flag pack for the game Victoria II.

This map was made in GIMP.

Why does Galicia leave Austria?

Galicia used to belong to the Commonwealth. Austria took it from the Commonwealth during the Partitions. In this universe, however, they only gained small pieces of Galicia, and the rest remained a part of the Commonwealth.

You mean Italy remained in the Triple Alliance during the war, in this scenario, instead of fighting against Austria? Why?

It didn't. This is before/at the start of the war.

Is Victoria 2 a good game ? I only have the demo, where you can only play as USA.
I have a question. If you play as the Austrian Empire is there a point till the Empire collapses and the world war starts or does that depend on how you play ?? Can you make colonies there ?? Or is this impossible for Austria ?

You could have asked that via Note :)

I'd say Victoria 2 is a good game, but that's just me. It has some flaws, but there are mods that eliminate them mostly. There are also alternate history mods as well. Also, an expansion pack, or something like that, is in the works.

If you play as the Austrian Empire it is relatively easy ( although it depends on your difficulty level, I suppose ) to keep the empire from collapsing. In fact, it usually exists up till even the game's end in around 1936. If the consciousness of the population keeps rising too much, and there's a lack of prestige, it can be converted to Austria-Hungary even.

It mostly depends on how you play it though. There are a lot of things to do in Victoria II, and your actions shape the world, depending on how much you participate in the events. There is no World War most of the time though, if not entirely.

You can make colonies there, as long as you have the necessary technologies and docks to do that. And it's impossible for practically everyone, as far as I know.

Still, I'd say that the game is worth getting. Especially the upcoming expansion, from what we can see so far.

On a related topic, have you played Europa Universalis III?

Fantastic work, and quite plausible as well if the circumstances were a little bit different during the partition era. I am assuming that the Republic of Three Nations doesn't suffer from the various problems that plagued the old P-L Commonwealth? (The noble privileges, Sejm veto rights etc.)

Oh, and what happened in Russia? Did the liberals - or someone like that - win power instead of the various Reds?

(Also, could you link me to the filtered flag pack you mentioned? Sounds like it could come in handy.)

The Republic of Three Nations, in this scenario, came into being thanks to a few additions and modifications to the Constitution of May 3.

The original, real Constitution of May 3, as you know, eliminated those problems, even though it was short lived and provoked a violent response from Prussia, Russia and a Russian-backed Targowica Confederation.

As for Russia, well, shortly after the beginning of the 20th century they experienced a revolution of sorts. It occurred due to the Bloody Sunday ( 1905; based on the real Bloody Sunday of 1905 ), much earlier than in the original timeline. The Russian masses gained what they aimed for: a democratic republic. The Marxist powers within Russia weren't popular enough to gain any power during those events, however.

Here's the link to the filtered flag pack ( there are different variants for various ideologies for each country ): [link]

Thanks and all, but I'd rather the RoTN wouldn't be called Poland :p

I'll keep that in mind next time.

Also, who would actually win here? Especially since the Russians, who apparently overthrew the Tzar without Lenin and friends, seem to be neutral?

Didn't mean to sound rude or anything, it's just that... Calling the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as Poland is the same as calling the United Kingdom as England, the Soviet Union as Russia, and etc.

Like I mentioned above, the Entente would still win. While the RoTN is not nearly as mighty as Russia, Germany and Austria-Hungary also lack some important territories that they had in the original timeline. Beside that, the Entente gained a lot of allies during the war...

The Triple Entente won. While Germany and Austria-Hungary did lack quite some territories that they had in the original timeline, and the Republic of Three Nations being smaller and less difficult to invade than Russia, the balance of power was still pretty close to that of the real World War I. That, and the various allies that joined the Entente still managed to overpower the Central Powers.

The RoTN did not have colonies.
